GORGEOUS WEATHER.
23 October –
Dear SummitClimbNews reader. We are currently away in a remote and lessvisited
valley of Nepal which is near to Mount Everest. We are two trekking and
climbing groups of men and women of all ages and abilities, one an "easier"
trekking/walking trip to the top of Mount Mera at 6476 metres / 21,241 feet,
and the other an accomplishable and exhilirating climbing trip to the top of
Mount Baruntse at 7152 metres / 23,458 feet. After the treks and climbs are
finished, we plan to cross the Amphu Labtsa Pass at 5839 metres / 19,151 feet
and descend into the famous Khumbu Valley where Mount Everest is located. Upon
our descent, we will walk past Everest to the romantic village of Namche
Bazaar, capital of the Sherpa people where comfortable hotels and delicious
bakeries abound. Finally we will fly from the tiny mountain airport of Lukla,
back to Kathmandu, Nepal's capital city. After resting for a few days, we look
forward to assembling our humanitarian team of men and women of all ages from
all walks of life and then setting off into an unusually remote and roadless
part of Nepal, where tourists never visit, to work together with poor Nepali
families to deliver needed medicines, books and clothing, teach in the local
schools, visit and care for patients in modest village hospitals, and to
construct a new wing of classrooms, a library and computer room at the
developing Charmading High School, which now serves 400 students and is the
only high school of its kind in the region, offering poor kids the rare chance
to study up to class 12
Let me share with you for a moment our present location. Currently our
trekking and climbing teams of men and women of all ages and abilities are
camped beneath the lovely and rarely spotted Mount Naulekh at 6368 metres /
20,887 feet. This morning we are relaxing in a pleasant camp on the calm
shores of beautiful blue Naulekh Lake at 5100 metres / 16,728 feet.
Surrounding us are Mounts Naulekh, Mera, lots of rocky "smaller" peaks, and
the Chamlang mountain range, a massive snow and ice barrier on the otherside
of the lovely, grassy Hingku valley. This afternoon we plan to walk a wee bit
up hill for 20 minutes, in order to practice an our or 2 of rope training on
some 6 metre / 20 foot high icy slopes of the Naulekh Glacier.This is a great
place to train for ice climbing and glacier descending as it offers something
for everyone, from the beginner to the expert.
Yesterday we crossed Nepal's famous pass, the "Mera La" at 5415 metres /
17,761 feet. There is a large flat glacier up there on the the top with a
lovely winding walking trail over the brilliant white ice and stunning
mountains all around. After resting today, tomorrow we plan to walk up to Mera
High Camp at 5780 metres / 18,958 feet and then walk to Mera's gorgeous 6500
metre / 21,320 foot high summit, with some of the best views imagineable of
Mount Everest, our world's highest, Mount Kangchenjunga, 3rd highest, Mount
Makalu, 4th highest, Mount Lhotse, 5th highest, and Mount Cho Oyu, 6th
highest. I can't think of any mountain which could provide such incredible
vistas, unless it is mighty Mount Everest itself. back to top
Two of our group plan to add to Mera's fun and excitement by skiing and
snowboarding down from the summit. What a thrill to slice soft fluffy powder
while looking at Everest. The rest of the group will walk down on the wide and
easy snow trail wearing their crampons. After climbing and descending Mera,
our team will divide, 1/2 the group making the 5 day return walk to Kathmandu,
where loads of comfortable hotels, delicious meals, refreshing spas and exotic
temples abound. The rest of us will carry on down to Kongma Dingma Village at
4800 metres / 15, 744 feet and then on to climb famous Mount Baruntse, one of
Nepal's "easiest" 7000 metre / 22, 960 foot high mountains, which is just 16
kilometres / 10 miles from Everest.
We are all very excited to enjoy the adventures to come and have been having
fun being a part of this interesting and friendly group of men and women of
all ages and abilities.
